Anaheim, September 22, 2020 -- The Association of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers® (AWFS) will host its 12th biennial Fresh Wood student furniture competition. The competition, which will be showcased at the 2021 AWFS®Fair, July 20-23, in Las Vegas, is open to high school and post-secondary students in woodworking or related programs. Entry applications will be accepted until May 3, 2021, and it is free to enter.

This year, SkillsUSA California put students’ woodworking skills to the test at six regional competitions throughout the state. As the national SkillsUSA website states: “Skills USA is a national nonprofit organization serving middle school, high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.” AWFS® sponsored Society of Wood Manufacturing (SWM) members volunteered at three of these California events.

LAS VEGAS − (July 20, 2019) – Nicholas Maraldo, a student at Furniture Institute of Massachusetts won the Best of Show award in the 2019 AWFS® Fresh Wood Competition after judges reviewed 42 finalist projects of from 25 different high schools and colleges in the U.S. at the 2019 AWFS®Fair in Las Vegas, Nevada. Thirty-three Fresh Wood student finalists went home with monetary prizes ranging from $250 to $1,000, along with trophies and software prizes.

This year 188 entries were received by Fresh Wood from high school and post-secondary students throughout the US and Canada. Forty-two projects were selected for the final round of judging which will take place at the AWFS®Fair in Las Vegas. SkillsUSA California hosted the 2019 State Cabinetmaking and Introductory Woodworking Competitions on Saturday, April 27th at Chaffey High School in Ontario, California. Staff and industry volunteers from the Association of Woodworking & Furnishings Suppliers® (AWFS®) assisted as contest coordinators, judges, and with overall contest support.
